What does "SCOP" mean?

The SCOP is the seasonal coefficient of performance in heating mode of a heat pump over the entire operating season. Since January 1, 2013, a European ERP (Energy Related Product) directive dictates the minimum obligations that must be met by manufacturers' specifications for electricity-consuming devices. This is to help buyers know the energy expenditure of the electrical equipment on offer, remove the most energy-intensive and least efficient from the market and accelerate ecological performance. What is the energy classification of the swimming pool heat pump?

Manufacturers must base themselves on the EN 14825 standard to define the test modes, determine the characteristics and carry out the SCOP. The calculation must be made on 4 precise and predefined operating points. The calculation is done as follows: the sum of the calorific energy in kWh produced over the season is divided by the sum consumed in kWh over the same period. The yield is this time seasonal and not like the COP (1 kWh consumed = x kWh produced in heat). This is the ratio of heat produced / electricity bill.

The SCOP takes into account 5 reference outdoor temperature ranges -10°C, -7°C, 0°C, +2°C, +12 °C corresponding to 3 types of European climate, hot (Athens), temperate (Strasbourg) and cold (Helsinki). This allows a better representation of the performance of the machine, its consumption and the real operating constraints. This is a more realistic indication that takes into account temperature fluctuations throughout the pool heating season. The indications are more reliable, and are closer to the actual electricity consumption.
A swimming pool heat pump will not have the same performance if it is installed in the temperate (Strasbourg), hot (Athens) or cold (Helsinki) zone, so not the same SCOP. The climate chosen for the energy labels of swimming pool heat pumps in France is the temperate climate which follows the meteorological conditions of Strasbourg.

A classification has therefore been established. The best “energy consumption/heat produced” yields are class A and the least efficient have a score of G.

SEER and SCOP
